The second grade reading skill that week was finding the main idea in a story. I provided examples of short stories or paragraphs on the smart board. Students took turns reading the selection out loud to the class and then stating the main idea. Finding the main idea helps students to better understand what they are reading and is a very important skill for them to learn in second grade.
